In this video I show how I went about cutting the front panel for a plastic ABS enclosure from Radioshack. I cut holes for switches, a keypad, and an lcd character display. I go through the the steps to make it. I start with thinking about it and getting a better idea of what I want to make. Then I take dimensions of the parts. Next I use the dimensions to create a 3D model and then export the model as a 2D dxf for CamBam. I use CamBam to create the tool paths and G-Code. I then cut that part and show it as a finished design. There are many techniques that I discuss in the video which are very valuable to learn if you haven't already seen them.

How to make chain mail rings - Enhanced Jig Tube. Duration : 6.78 Mins.
This is a jig that I made to make chain mail rings MUCH easier! The jig comprises of 3 tensioner pulleys (these are just concave roller bearings for sliding doors - available at any good hardware store) that create the tension between the bar and the wire so that I don't have to. Make sure that the roller closest to the bar is as close as possible (when you make your jig). Follow the way I've made the wire go around and up (around that roller) and then to the bar - this not only creates the tension but also stops the wire from wanting to jump back onto itself (back onto the created spring) as it's going. The Aluminium tube is 12mm diameter and the hole in the jig is 12.5mm (for an easy fit). The thickness of stainless wire is 1.6mm which I think is an ornamental thickness. There are lots of other youtube vids that explain thicknesses and ring size and patterns in more detail. The old jig that I showed is good for learning the basics and starting out, but you need to get into mass production of rings to create something big like a Hauberk. This is only the first step in making the rings. I will be eventually making up a robotic jig for cutting the rings also. Stay tuned for that video!

At the end of the video a few other parts that were cut before are presented together. This is a fuselage for an F86 sabre in progress. Made by a gear motor, Beogram 1000 turntable, loudspeaker unit, wires, tape and a nail. Improvements: More compact design :-) Better cutter needle Better sound transfer to the needle (instead of using a wire) Better signal level control. As you can hear, the sound level is low. But it is very dificult to control by ear. To high levels and the grove-cut crosses the neighbor grove (distance approx 0,2 mm) which ruins the recording.

My middle school technology students have been making and flying paper walkalong gliders. But I've been searching for a walkalong glider design that's easier to make and fly, for first-time fliers. I found it in a Wisconsin college engineering student's work. Michael Thompson figured out how to slice ordinary white styrofoam--either recycled electronics packaging or insulation sheets from building supply stores---into very thin slices. Then he cuts and forms them into slow-flying gliders, including his famous Jagwings. Foam gliders are fast to make, slow flying--great for a starter walkalong glider. Michael sent me a glider and patiently taught me about them. Soon my students and I were making them, flying them and innovating variations, and you can too. thebiketube.com For the 32 hole rear wheel you will need 18 spokes of a certain size for the drive side and 18 spokes of a certain size for the non-drive side. To get these spokes you can either purchase spoke blanks, or cut them and thread them yourself with the Hozan Spoke Threading Machine. In this video we'll demonstrate how to do that using 310mm spoke blanks. After setting up the Hozan and marking your spokes, all you need to do is clamp your spoke into the Hozan and start turning the lever. The Hozan has a "tap" that forces the threads into the spoke in a process similar to cold forging. This is better than actually removing material, which would weaken the spokes. As you thread the spoke into the Hozan, it will follow the existing threads on the spoke, you will feel more resistance while turning the Hozan as it starts to create new threads. Make sure to calculate the distance you need to thread the spoke, because you do not want to add any more threads than you need. In the video we needed to thread on another 11mm, and then cut off some of the spoke. After you hit your thread mark, back the spoke out of the machine. The next step is to cut off the excess spoke material. First thread on a nipple. This will straighten out the threads when you remove it after cutting the spoke.
